How To Ascertain An Acid Reflux Symptom

GERD or the Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease happens when LES, lower esophageal sphincter, does not function properly causing a regurgitation of the stomach contents through the esophagus. The esophagus is where food passes down into the stomach.

Once the refluxed acids make contact with the esophagus lining, it yields some kind of a burning sensation either in the throat or chest. This episode is called a heartburn. For a person experiencing heartburn, he or she can even taste the refluxed contents at the of his or her mouth, in which it is termed as acid indigestion. Irregular heartburn incidents do not necessarily imply one has a GERD. But a heartburn that occurs two times or even more in a week can be referred as GERD. Watch out for this can develop into something more serious.

Acid Reflux Disease Symptoms - Knowing your BodyAnybody can acquire a GERD. No one is excuse, not even a pregnant woman, infants or even children can have this. So how does one really knows what he or she is dealing with?

The primary signs of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease are acid flow back and continuous heartburn. But some may experience GERD without any heartburn, instead, they will feel chest pains, hoarseness especially early morning, and they may find swallowing to be an effort. A choking feeling may also be experienced, or that something is stuck in the throat. Awfully bad breath and dry cough may result out of this.

Other general signs of an acid reflux is bloating, a sickening feeling, mouth acidity, belching, and burning pain especially in drinking hot drinks. Like a typical heartburn, symptoms just come and go, and rarely, advance to a more serious level particularly following a meal. There are some symptoms that are hard to diagnose for they appear like other health condition rather than acid reflux. These are: ceaseless cough that commonly attacks at nighttime. The cough may be due to the acid irritation of the windpipe. No wonder, asthma and hoarseness symptoms can be stimulated by a reflux. Sign of a heart attack like severe chest pains can be felt too.

Tests are not needed for obvious symptoms. After showing the typical symptoms of acid reflux, proper treatments may be administered. To eliminate the frequent incidents of acid reflux, quit smoking if you are into cigarettes and tobacco. Cigarette chemicals have the relaxing effects to the sphincter, the more reason for acid back flow. Food and drinks with peppermint, chocolate, hot drinks, spicy, tomatoes and coffee are known to make acid reflux symptoms worse. And some medicines are not exempted either. Common culprits are inflammatory painkillers like an aspirin or ibuprofen. Weight, posture and bedtime factors also have their share of causes for an acid reflux. It is best to go to sleep with your stomach empty, which means, no more eating three hours prior to sleeping and two hours drinking abstinence before retiring for the night.
